The cold open: email & the direct ask

The gist

Direct outreach, cold email and the occasional call, still works when it's targeted and well-timed. Protect your deliverability like an asset, and treat every send as a real attempt to start one conversation.

Cold email is declared dead every year and keeps working anyway, for the people who treat it as a craft rather than a spray. The difference between outreach that lands and outreach that vanishes into spam folders is almost entirely discipline: who you send to, how much, from where, and whether real humans reply.

Deliverability is the whole game

You can write the best message in the world; if it lands in spam, it doesn't exist. Deliverability is a system, not a setting. Authenticate your domain (SPF, DKIM, DMARC). Warm a domain before you lean on it. Keep daily volume sane, inboxes flag sudden spikes. And above all, send to verified, relevantpeople, because bounces and “mark as spam” are the fastest way to poison your reputation.

A practical move many teams make: send cold outreach from a secondary domain (e.g.get-yourbrand.com), not your primary. If reputation takes a hit, your real email keeps working. Sigora hands you clean, verified leads to load into your own sending tools and domains for exactly this reason, you keep control of deliverability, the part you can't outsource.

The follow-up is where the replies are

Most replies don't come from the first email. They come from the second or third, not because you “bumped” the thread, but because you added something. A new angle. A relevant proof point. A different pain. “Just following up” is noise; “here's the specific thing I think you're hitting” is a reason to reply.

  • Space follow-ups a few days apart, and cap the sequence, three to four touches, then stop or switch channels.
  • Make every touch stand alone. Assume they never read the last one.
  • Stop the moment they reply. Automation that keeps sending after a human answered is the worst look in outbound.

Key ideas

  • Deliverability is a system: warm domains, verified lists, sane volume, real replies.
  • A 'send-from' domain separate from your primary protects your main email.
  • Follow-ups are where most replies live, but add value, don't just 'bump.'
