Sourcing: lists that aren't stale
The gist
Bought lists rot the day they're exported. The modern approach is to research accounts against your ICP on demand, enrich the right contact, and verify before you send, so the list is fresh because it was built for this campaign.
The oldest mistake in outbound is treating a list as an asset. The moment you export a CSV, it starts rotting: people change jobs, titles drift, companies pivot. A list bought in January is materially wrong by March, and every stale row you email is a bounce that quietly damages your ability to reach the good ones.
Research on demand, not in bulk
The better model is to build the list for the campaign, at the moment you run it. You describe the accounts you want; a system researches the open web and data sources for companies that match and are showing a live signal; and only then does it find the right contact inside each one. The list is fresh because it didn't exist yesterday, it was assembled against today's reality.
Account-first, then the person
Strong outbound is account-first. Decide which companies are worth a conversation, using firmographics and triggers, and only then identify the human who owns the problem and the human who signs. Leading with a name you scraped, and reverse-engineering a reason to reach out, is how you end up sending the same hollow message to everyone.
- Match on signals, not just attributes. A company hiring for the exact pain you solve is worth ten that merely fit the size band.
- Get the right contact. The economic buyer and the pain owner are often different people, sometimes you need both.
- Verify before you send. Run every email through verification. A clean list protects the deliverability that makes all your other sends land.
This is precisely the work Sigora does in the background: you never touch a scraper or a CSV. You describe the buyer, and a fresh, scored, verified list appears, which is why the next chapter, the message, is where your time should actually go.
Key ideas
- Static lists decay fast, people change jobs constantly, and titles go out of date.
- Build around accounts first, then find the right person inside them.
- Verify deliverability before sending; bounces wreck your sender reputation.
